Travel Insurance

Why do you need travel insurance when venturing beyond these shores?

Medical bills
Medical costs overseas can be substantial; for example, injury from a car accident in South Africa can lead to medical costs of up to £146,000; a heart attack in Spain, £35,000; a hip fracture in the USA, £22,531. Medical expenses escalate if there is a need for repatriation. In Europe’s most popular summer destinations such as Greece and Spain, repatriation costs are £11,500 and £8,000 respectively, while the cost of an Air Ambulance from the US West Coast to the UK is approximately £38,000.

Get the right cover for you
The Consumers' Association says its investigators found extensive evidence of miss-selling by travel agents in that just one out of 28 travel agents checked customers for pre-existing medical conditions, as well as explaining what the policy did - and did not - cover. Most Britons pay over the odds and/or buy travel insurance that simply doesn’t cover them - if you buy your insurance from a travel agent, the chances are that you will pay far more than you would if you bought it elsewhere.

Look beyond the travel agent
UK holidaymakers waste up to £250 million every year buying their travel insurance from travel agents rather than shopping around for more competitively priced and more comprehensive cover.

Most tour operators and travel agents’ policies offer relatively poor levels of cover and cost significantly more than those of on offer from high street providers, yet around estimated 60 per cent of travellers still buy their insurance from them.

Policy checklist
Levels of cover vary widely, but the Consumers’ Association recommends that you should have:
• at least £1m of medical cover in Europe
• at least £2m in the States and the rest of the world
• at least £1,500 baggage and belongings cover - and watch out for policies which limit the amount you can claim for any one item. Check that the total covers you for what you’re actually taking abroad
• Personal liability of at least £1m, to cover you if you cause injury or damage
• Compensation for trips which may be cancelled or curtailed – and the costs of getting you home in an emergency
• A 24-hour emergency line, and cover for your legal costs as well
• Cover from an insurer that is a member of the Financial Ombudsman Service, in case you need to complain – the Ombudsman can intervene to make your insurer settle

Getting more for your money
If you take a couple of trips a year, you can reduce your costs with an annual policy which covers your summer holiday, your winter skiing and the odd impromptu weekend break or two as well (most annual policies allow unlimited trips provided you do not spend more than 31 consecutive days abroad at one time).

Read the small print
Whichever policy you choose, you should read the small print carefully to check that you’re covered.

Avoid those credit card offers that drop onto the doormat promise free holiday cover; they could just be offering travel accident insurance, which is not comprehensive. If you’re doing something slightly out of the ordinary - like scuba diving in the Red Sea, the chances are that these policies won't cover you.

Take care but do not leave home without it.
